Dreadnought tiles used on a unique re-roof project in Hampshire

When it came to a re-roof Hampshire County Council choose our customer, D Adams & Sons Roofing Ltd. Established in 1997, D Adams & Sons Roofing is a large family run business. Covering all aspects of roofing across the South Coast. They pride themselves in working safely and ensuring works are carried out to high standards and meeting current regulations.

Chandlers Ford Library in Eastleigh, Hampshire was built in 1981-2 by County Architect, Colin Stansfield Smith responsible for changing the face of local authority architecture in Britain. In 1991 he was awarded the RIBA royal gold medal for creating some of the most successful and adventurous buildings in the country.

The library is Grade II on the National Heritage List for its special architectural interest. It’s built in a horseshoe shape, has a steeply pitched expansive roof to let in as much light as possible, which is facetted and concave – not the easiest of jobs!

Dreadnought plain tile in plum red was chosen as an excellent colour match and used to restore the character and charm of the roof. Tom Brewster Contracts Manager explained:

“Myself and Simon Clay, Branch Manager at Burton Roofing suggested Dreadnought tiles after we found the special tiles were not available as standard. I met with Dreadnaught who were more than happy to assist in this project.”

“Dreadnought tiles were able accommodate the specially made valley and hip tiles required by the historical team. These consisted of a left hand and right hand tile made at a very shallow degree which allowed a stagger to break the bond.”

“The specially made valleys and hips have differential angles to suit the curve. The roll top ridges were also specially made”

Works are still in progress, they started beginning of November, they aim to finish in February 2018 and the library will remain open throughout. The library is located in a busy shopping mall and next to a busy Doctors surgery, so there has been the inevitable access issues for the works. D Adams & Sons Roofing Ltd have to share their works area within the car park to the mall and surgery, pathways are often closed off for safety precautions and they’ve had to work around noise constraints and a couple of technical issues.

We asked Tom how long they’ve been our customer and are the advantages of using Burton Roofing?

“We’ve been using Burton Roofing since their branch opened in Southampton, I’m guessing we would be one of their biggest customers. They provide an excellent service and have experienced staff at the end of the phone line that are always able to assist is our enquiries, providing expert advice”.

“We will always use Burton Roofing across many types of our work, including new build sites, refurb work and flat roofing”.

Great to hear! Thank you for explaining your project to us Tom.
