Van Dyk Hotel

BRM are thrilled to provide roofing materials to The Van Dyk Hotel a grand, 4 star, 1 Rosette owning independent hotel in Derbyshire. The Wildes Group, who purchased the 15 bedroom hotel in 2016, have obtained planning permission for an incredible 54 new rooms along with luxury new restaurant, function suite, spa (with sunken jacuzzi) and treatment rooms.

This week, Sanderson’s Major Works Manager, John Hornby and Ashtree Roofing’s Contract’s Manager, Stuart Bower kindly gave us a site visit to see where our materials are being used on the impressive build.

Part of a new ‘Organic Village’

The hotel will provide a predicted one hundred new jobs for local people, along with a substantial benefit to business and tourism in the region. Working in a planning partnership with the housebuilder Jones Homes Ltd (responsible for the residential development of 52 family homes opposite) the Wildes Group hope the new vibrant destination resort will become a premier venue for business, leisure and special occasions. They also hope it will be a central part of the community featuring a deli open to all. The complex will be powered by a renewable biomass boiler measuring 5 x 20m which, when not required, will feed back into the national grid.

A nursery for the famous Van Dyk garden centre was located next to the original building and it’s into the footprint of the outbuildings that the hotel is now expanding.

Van Dyk Hotel Extension

Impressive extension

The substantial build is being undertaken by Sanderson who specialise in leisure and retail construction projects. The ground was broken on site in March and works are due to be completed by the end of November. The roof being the responsibility of our long-standing customer Ashtree Roofing.

The slate roof has large dormers constructed of single ply Allison Pike ltd architects, responsible for some major hotel and hospitality venues in the UK, were tasked with designing the hotel extension to create a landmark building. whilst retaining a materials palette in harmony with the style and history of the original hotel and to blend in with the locality. Dressed stone facades and a blue slate with a consistent finish was specified. 25,000 CUPA PIZARRAS R12 Excellence are being installed. That’s a whopping 1275m2!

Cupa Slate

A best seller in the UK, the R12 Excellence slate has a flat surface and regular thickness that’s easy to install, needing little or no grading - ensuring projects go as smoothly as possible.

BRM have also supplied battens, verge, Ventratech slate vents, mono ridge, and hook fixings for the slates.

Hook fixing

Ashtree currently have 3 slaters on site working in the downpours this week to ensure the project is complete by the start of the festive season. The method of hook fixing the slate is often associated with coastal areas and parts of the UK prone to wind uplift .Three storeys high, the hotel roof will be marginally more exposed to the elements, however Stuart Bower tells us Ash Tree Roofing favour the hook installation for the aesthetic and also ease of maintenance.

A roof covering will last a lifetime

Ashtree work with CUPA slate regularly on their roofing projects appreciating the quality and the confidence provided from each slate being fully traceable, tested to BS EN12326:2014 requirements, CE Marked, and backed by the famous CUPA manufacturer warrantee.

We look forward to bringing you more images of the finished project …on a dry day!
