Welsh Roof Slates & Tiles

Welsh Roof Slates & Tiles

Mined from quarries around Wales, this is the premium class when it comes to roofing materials. Welsh slate roof tiles are made of natural stone that has been reclaimed – and not only does it look great, but it’s also one of the most durable in the industry. Welsh slate has been used since the Iron ages and remains a popular choice for those updating or upgrading their roof.

Read on to find out more about this spectacular slate, the benefits of using it and how you can install it.

Which types of Welsh slate are for sale?

Welsh slate roof tiles are available in two forms, both of which look and perform exceptionally well atop residential homes or other buildings. Read on for more information about each of them.

Welsh Penrhyn slate

Sometimes referred to as Bangor Blue, Welsh Penrhyn slate is produced in one of the largest quarries in the world in Snowdonia. Its hugely practical properties mean it can be cut into thin sheets but remains durable, which makes it ideal for a wide range of roofing projects.

Welsh Cwt-y-Bugail slate

Mined out of the Ffestiniog quarry in North Wales since 1840, this sought-after slate is highly durable and looks the part too. Its distinct dark-blue-grey shading with white veins makes for a strong option on most roofs.

What are the benefits of using Welsh slate?

Not only are Welsh slate roof tiles easy on the eye, but they are also extremely durable. And they offer plenty of other benefits too. These include:

  1. Lifespan

Our Welsh slate tiles are guaranteed to last over 100 years and that includes their colouring. Thanks to their colour-fast properties, in a century's time they’ll look as good as the day you bought them, with little-to-no fading.

  1. Unaffected by extreme weather

When we say it’s the most durable in the world, we mean it. Many roof tiles may struggle as temperatures begin to drop during winter but you can rely on these to beat the cold and keep the interior of your home free from any leaks.

  1. UK-manufactured

Getting your Welsh slate direct from the source in the UK means time and money will be saved as only a low level of on-site grading is required. You’ll also be supporting the work of local businesses.

  1. Available in a range of sizes

Welsh slate is ideal for heritage and prestigious projects which may demand more specific cuts. We have a range of sizes available, so find the one that best fits your project.

How should Welsh slate be installed?

Although Welsh slate is a gold-standard option, it’s still laid the same as any other tile, which helps to make your life even easier. Follow the steps below for successful installation every time.

  1. Measure the roof

Begin by measuring the roof, so you know how many tiles you need. You’ll also need to measure the pitch as slate can usually only be added to roofs with a pitch of 20° and over.

  1. Fit the roof membrane

The membrane is essential to any roofing project as it aids ventilation which ensures moisture doesn’t form. We recommend starting at one of the bottom corners and rolling it across the trusses for the best results, before nailing it into place and repeating the process.

  1. Set out the battens

Roof battens are used to fix your Welsh slate tiles in place. To figure out how far apart these should be, why not try our Batten Gauge for more accurate results?

  1. Laying the Welsh slate

Once the battens are secured, begin laying your Welsh slate tiles. To ensure they hold, use at least two nails but be aware that more than that increases the risk of a crack or break.
