Flat Roof Insulation

Flat roof insulation is one of the most versatile, invaluable installations used to boost energy efficiency and keep heat loss to a minimum. With the right materials, it can make an enormous difference when it comes to improving comfort and living standards in any building.

Why do I need flat roof insulation?

Flat roofs are an important part of modern architecture and urban building design. From residential properties to industrial facilities and high-rise apartment blocks, they’re a practical addition to a variety of spaces for working, living and learning.

Since heat rises, most energy is naturally lost through the roof and loft spaces. Installing flat roof insulation is not only essential to enhance energy efficiency and reduce heating costs but provides further benefits as well. Certain flat roof systems offer insulation and protection against the elements to make sure that the interior never sees any damage from torrential rain, snow or high winds.

How should a flat roof be insulated?

The Energy Saving Trust recommends that a flat roof should be insulated from above. A layer of robust insulation board can be installed either above the roof’s own waterproof layer or right on top of the original timber roof surface with a new weatherproof layer on top of the insulation. It’s recommended to get this done when the original roof covering needs to be replaced.

If your flat roof needs replacing entirely, it must be insulated in compliance with building regulations. While it is possible to insulate a flat roof from underneath, this can cause issues with damp and condensation if not completed by a knowledgeable tradesperson.

Still, installing flat roof insulation could potentially save you money on your heating bills; the exact amount will vary depending on just how much of your building has a flat roof but you might be surprised at the difference.

Why is warm flat roof insulation better?

Flat roof insulation types vary between two primary forms: cold and warm flat roof insulation. Identifying the best choice depends on the nature of each project and insulating a flat roof is usually a task that should be undertaken during construction.

  • Warm roof insulation enables conservation of heat without the need for roof void ventilation and also prevents damp and decay from forming by allowing moisture to escape. A warm roof is recommended most often today by planners and traders as it is generally considered the best option for buildings in the UK climate.
  • Cold roof insulation is a more affordable way of insulating and is popular with external structures including outbuildings. It often requires an additional roof void ventilation system to limit the accumulation of damp, which can be a tricky and problematic process. From a modern perspective, it’s the least energy-efficient form of insulation.

Sturdy roof insulation boards are much more practical – so warm flat roof insulation is likely to be a better choice for projects on flat-roofed buildings.

What is flat roof insulation made from?

Flat roof insulation is designed and manufactured using a variety of materials which are scientifically proven to keep in as much heat as possible. We recommend dual-faced flat roof insulation boards produced with a combination of torch-on bitumen and fibreglass tissue felt to do the job.

The glass tissue face works effectively when used during the application of mechanically fixed, single-ply membrane waterproofing systems onto a variety of surface materials including concrete, timber and metal flat roof decks.

A variety of different materials can be used for roof boards but PIR (polyisocyanurate) boards are the most popular choice since they can withstand being walked on. If you think you’ll need to access your roof to check for damage in the future, this could be an important factor to consider.

What are the benefits of flat roof insulation?

  • Lower energy costs

Thanks to flat roof insulation’s ability to trap heat within the building, you won’t need to turn up the heating quite as often. This could lead to a surprising difference in your heating bill costs, offering a simple opportunity to save money.

  • Improved heat efficiency

Effective insulation will keep heat inside your home for longer. You might be shocked to hear that you could be losing up to a quarter of all heat from your roof, so it’s best not to leave your house uninsulated.

  • A worthy investment

With the installation of any good-quality insulated flat roof panels, there might be some reasonably high costs in sourcing the materials and labour. However, the savings you’ll make on your energy bills should pay for the renovations before you know it.

  • Cooler space during hot weather

Residential flat roof insulation does a good job of keeping temperatures constant. Opening doors, windows and VELUX skylights in the evening and at night promotes cooler airflow up to your flat roof insulation, keeping internal conditions cool before the following day.

  • Improved energy rating

If you’re thinking of eventually selling your home, having an ideal or improved energy efficiency rating could improve your chances of making a great profit. Since all types of flat roof insulation will increase energy efficiency, you’re bound to also see improvements in your overall energy rating.
