The benefits of VELUX CABRIO® balconies

Do you lack outside space?
Have a room in your attic which is dark?
Do you find it difficult to add natural light because of the pitch of the roof?

The innovative VELUX CABRIO® balcony system provides the solution to help create the loft conversion you’ve been dreaming of. Specifically designed for loft rooms, the beauty of the CABRIO® is that when closed it looks like a standard roof light, but when opened it creates the small balcony in the slope of the roof in which you can stand, and enjoy both the extra headroom and panoramic views.

Want to make your property exceptional, whilst adding value?

VELUX have cleverly designed the CABRIO® to give valuable extra space when open, and the feeling of more space when closed. Balcony windows add the ‘wow’ factor to bedrooms, living rooms, and especially kitchens in loft conversions or even loft apartments. Quick and easy to fit, it’s installed like a skylight, but opens to produce a private balcony letting you enjoy the view from your property.

While adding to your outdoor living when open; when closed, they will still provide extra light and filtered fresh air thanks to their unique ventilation system. Open or closed, not only does their sleek design look great, they are a fantastic way to add value to your home, with the potential to increase the value of your property by 5% to 10%.

When open, the VELUX CABRIO® enables you to enjoy the uninterrupted panoramic views you don’t get with a dormer.

What are the advantages of a CABRIO® over a Dormer?

There’s nothing new about converting your loft, and practically all conversions have VELUX rooflights, even dormer conversions. However, for roof pitches between 35° and 53°, whether you are starting from scratch or looking to increase the light inside your loft, the larger glazed area provided by the CABRIO® provides more light than any other VELUX window options in your internal space.

Installation of VELUX windows to the roof line (rather than a dormer) is also a cheaper option, making them a cost-effective choice for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need planning permission for a VELUX CABRIO window?

A question we are regularly asked! VELUX advise that planning permission for a CABRIO®  balcony isn’t usually necessary. Reasons include the fact that there’s no requirement for the construction of a raised platform - the existing loft floor can be used to stand on; the window doesn’t protrude past the plane of the front or rear slope of the roof and also the fact that the CABRIO®  is a window not a door, with no external handle.

Whilst installing a CABRIO® normally complies with Permitted Development regulations, there are exceptions, including if the window forms part of a larger project like a loft conversion or when your property is in a conservation area. We always recommend a quick phone call to your local Planning Authority to check.

What if I want to go even further and have some outside living space?

No problem! You have the option of a VELUX Roof Terrace Window where a balcony is built directly into the lowest part of your roof, to avoid compromising on your internal space. The roof terrace allows you to make the most of your unused roof space, providing a bright, large and open living area.

Extend your space to access the outside and provide that perfect spot in the sun. Call us for more details.
